Pension of Francis Marion Barnes Submitted by Sarah Fitzgerald On this 15th day of May, 1886 personally appeared before me, H. P. Collins, Clerk of the District Court, a court of Record within and for the county aforesaid Francis M. Barnes aged 45 years, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Francis M. Barnes who enrolled as a private on the 20th of April 1864 in company “H” of the 37th Ills. Inft. Vols. Commanded by Captain George H. Merrill, and was honorably discharged at Huston Texas on the 15th day of May, 1866. That his personal description is as follows. Age 45 years; height 5 foot 7 inches, complexion light, hair brown, eyes blue. That while a member of the organization aforesaid in the service and in the line of duty near Memphis in the state of Tennessee, on or about May 1864, he contracted catarrh from cold and exposure while on the march after Forrest, that said disease has ever since continued and has involved his lungs, and his hearing has also become affected in consequence. While after rebels near Morganza Bend Louisiana in July or August 1864 from exposure and hardship he contracted rheumatism and diarrhea. Did not go to hospital but was attended by an old woman (an herb doctress) in whose home he was placed. At siege of Fort Blakeley in April 1865 he was struck by a rile ball over the left eye and has ever since suffered with pain in his head. The shock rendered him senseless and on recovering consciousness he refused to go to a hospital or to the rear. That he was not treated in hospital. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than stated above. That he has not been in the military or naval service of the United States since the 15th day of May 1866, and that his occupation has been that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service above-named he was a man of good sound physical health, being when enrolled a farmer. That he is now greatly disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries above described, received in the service of the United States, and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation D. I. Murphy of Washington D.C. his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim. Washington D.C. Apr. 26, 1890. It is alleged that Francis M. Barnes enlisted Apr. 20, 1864 and served as a private in Co. H, 37 Ret’t Ills Inf. And was discharged at Houston Texas, May 15, 1866. It is also alleged that while on duty at Memphis, Tenn. On or about May, 1864, he was disabled by catarrh – lung disease – impaired hearing – In 1864 – July or Aug. contracted rheumatism & diarrhea, In 1865 April I was struck over eye by rifle ball and was treated in hospitals of which the names, location, and dates of treatment are as follows: none. In case of the above-named soldier the War Department is requested to furnish an official statement of the enrollment, discharge, and record of service so far as the same may be applicable to the foregoing allegation, together with full medical history. Pease give the rank he held at the time he is claimed to have incurred the disability alleged, and if records show that he was not in line of duty during that period, let the fact be stated. We hereby certify that in compliance with the requirements of the law, we have carefully examined this applicant, who states that he is suffering from the following disability, incurred in the service viz: Catarrh affecting lungs & hearing. Rheumatism and diarrhea, ____ over eye. Pulse rate per minute 74, respiration, 20, temperature 99, height 5 feet 10 inches, weight 173 pounds, age 45 years. He made the following statement upon which he bases his claim for Ong. Pain in both sides chest whenever take cold, and tonsils swell, frequent bad attacks of headache front and back of head, quick change of ____ brings on attack of diarrhea sometimes pass blood. Finger and knee joints would swell up until a year ago. Upon examination we find the following objective conditions; Theses is a catarrhal inflammation of nose and throat; mucus membrane is dry and glossy tendency to ______ of nasal cantus. Respiration mummer is considerably marked in right lung, left lung normal, no rales, resonance normal, heart action is normal, su___ dullness normal. Examination of rectum shows a general inflamed condition with ulceration of an tenor, perterin? And one lateral mull? No pite? Tumors. No swelling of joints or muscles in any part of body, no limitation of motion, hearing not impaired, no scar over eye, no evidence of mound? From the existing condition and the history of this claimant, as stated by himself, it is in our judgment probably that the disability was incurred in the service as he claims, and that it has not been prolonged or aggravated by vicious habits. On this 18 day of July A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety personally appeared before me, clerk of the district court, a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid, Francis M. Barnes aged 45 years, a resident of the town of Aurora county of Hamilton, State of Nebraska, who, being duly sworn according to law, declared that he is the identical Francis M. Barnes who was enrolled on the 20th day of April, 1864, in Co “H” 37th Ills. Inft. Vols. As a private in the war of the rebellion, and served at least ninety days, and was honorably discharged at Huston Texas, on the 15th day of May 1866. That he is now unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of Catarrh, rheumatism, diarrhea, rifle ball wound over left eyes and effect of sunstroke. That said disabilities are not due to vicious habits, and are to the best of his knowledge and belief permanent. That he has applied for pension under application No. 742,896. That he make this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890. He hereby appoints D I. Ill, Feb. 10, 1894; Sir; In reply to your request I have to state that I have known Francis Barns for a long time we enlisted at the same time and I no that he was sick most of the time I no he was a stout healthy young man when he went out and I no he has never been well since or until he moved away from here which has ben eight or nine years. I think _____ ought to have a pension for his health is gone as to his sickness I no he had the disentary and it said with him. As long as he was here. That was in 64 or 65 that he was sick to dates and when he was in the hospital I do not recollect it has been a good while ago I no he was in the hospital a good many times I supposed he was getting a pension I haven’t much to rite as I have forgotten dates, yours respectfully Joseph Leiber Revision, Pension Claim No. 549,240 (why is this pension number different?) We hereby certify that in compliance with the requirements of the law we have carefully examined this applicant, who states that he is suffering from the following disabilities, incurred in the service, viz: Rheumatism – Diarrhea – catarrh – wound of eye – dis. Of rectum – results of sun stroke, and that he receives a pension of 12.00 dollars a month He makes the following statement upon which he bases his claim for revision. Upon examination we find the following objective conditions; pulse rate 70, respiration 20, temperature 99, height, 5 feet 8 inches, weight 150 pounds; age 49 years. We find this soldier suffering from pheustasus? Both articular? And muscular affection most the joints at shoulder elbows and wrist of both arms also both legs at hips knees and ankles all the above mentioned joints d__ tender and painful but at this time but little swollen joints and stiff and motions limited at 25% no atrophy or contrition. Hear is normal catarrh is present (noisphgryng__?) membrans of nose inflamed and swollen throat infected nasal membrane covered with a mucus pus-throat in p___ condition sense of smell gone and voice thick – large size tumors are present 14 incehs in length ½ inch in diameter, inflamed & bleeding ulcerated and painful ____ protrudes one inch and is inflamed ____ and is covered with ulcerations - _____ an _______ & ___________ internal – This is most aggravated case of hemorrhoids. The applicant is a constant sufferer from diarrhea during the _________ bring often confined to his house and bed for days and weeks – then is at this time but little emaciation out but tho _____ is weak and debilitated skin sallow and dry tongue and stomach none of constant pain is present in region of liver and spleen but find no enlargement of either organ. No fissure no ______ - e____ is normal. This soldier cannot endure heat and is often afflicted with syn___. Falls down and remains for a time unconscious – intense pain is complained of in head and skin - ______ normal & this man is wholly unable to do manual labor – no vicious habits – this applicant has been treated by members of your board and __ an familiar with his ailments from professional experience. Testimonial - Oelwein, Fayette Co Iowa, Feb. 14, 1896 – I knew the applicant Francis M. Barnes as a comrade of my Co. I remember him quite well, as a good true and faithful soldier. But as to his disability I can now recall only that he was somewhat debilitated toward the latter part of his service, But to what extent it has affected him since I could not say as I have not met him since his discharge. It seems in my mind that he was either knocked over into a creek, or fell in and was chilled from the effects and was laid up for a time. But the length of time since has obliterated the particulars, dates and places from my mind but it seems that it must have been in Mo or _____ in early ’63 or latter part of 62. In the service of the United States in the Civil War and was honorably discharged at Houston, Texas on the 15th day of May A.D. 1866. That he was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States otherwise than as stated above. On this 2nd day of May A.D. 1922, personally appeared before me, a notary public, within and for the county and State aforesaid, Francis M. Barnes who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 76 years of age, and a resident of Aurora county of Hamilton state of Nebraska and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Morristown, Illinois, under the name of Francis M. Barnes on the 20th day of April 1864 as a private in Co “H” 37th regt Illinois infantry in the service of the United State, in the Civil War, and was honorably discharged at Houston, Texas on the 15th day of May 1866. That his personal description at enlistment was as follows; height 5 feet 7 inches, complexion light, color of eyes blue, color of hair brown, that his occupation was farmer, that he was born July 3rd 1845 at Hood’s Mill, Maryland. That he requires the regular personal aid and attendance of another person on account of the following disabilities; Catarrh of nose and throat, deafness in both ears, leakage of the heart, sarcoma of left testicle, motor disturbance of muscles of face hands and feet (choric ataxia). That since leaving the service he has resided at Osco, Illinois, and Aurora Nebraska and his occupation has been farmer. That he is now a pensioner under certificate No 549240.
