Obituaries & Death Notices Rev Axel Fahnstrom, Retired Minister, Business Man, City Official, Dies after a long illness. The Rev Axel L Fahnstrom, who personalized the true Christian in every aspect of his daily life, died November 24, in Hillcrest Home, where his ministry had brought comfort to countless patients before his health gradually failed and he entered the home in 1976. Axel had been active in many phases of community life -- as a business man (Fahnstrom Clothing Store) and as city official (alderman, clerk and treasurer) but he is best remembered for his ministry in the Assembly of God Church, as a supply pastor in other churches, in nursing homes, at funeral services, as American Legion chaplain and at many events. In much of his Christian work Axel had the assistance of Mrs. Fahnstrom, the former Helen Strand, who survives him. As his condition gradually failed, Helen cared for him in her home at 1009 West Division street until he entered Hillcrest, two years ago. At his death he was 82 years old. In June 1962, Galvaland published a detail account of his work and it opened with this quotation: He is one of the finest Christian men I have ever known.Assemble of God Pastor It was in 1935 when Axel became affiliated with the Full Gospel Mission church established by Mrs. Anna B Lock, which became a part of the Assemblies of God in 1938. He completed that denomination's course of study and became pastor in February, 1942, his service continued more than eight years, until August, 1950. Later his supply work was in several Galva churches as well as in Kewanee, Bishop Hill and Osceola, a total of about a dozen churches. For more than 20 years, Axel and Helen conducted devotions in nursing homes --- Hillcrest, (the former county convalescent home) Wassons, Jehling and Galva Manor. Axel was a lifetime resident of Galva where he was born May 25, one of five children of Andrew & Lisen Magnusen Fahnstrom. He attended school here and had a boyhood job at Galva Heater Co. After his military service he became a partner of his father and his brother Elmer in the clothing store. They continued the store on Front street after their father's death in December, 1944. The business was sold to John Girvin in January, 1962 and Axel continued to assist there until 1973. The Fahnstrom store began as a tailor ship by Edwin Fahnstrom of Victoria, on south Exchange street in 1903. Edwin's brother Andrew, who had learned the trade in Sweden, joined him the next year and the store was moved to Front street in 1908. Military and Veteran Services. Axel enlisted in the United States Army on September 3, 1918 and was in the personnel department at Camp Grant until he was discharged November 30, 1918. After the war, Axel served with the United States shipping board, the equivalent of the present Merchant Marines and was in Chicago and Boston. For almost 60 years he was a member of the Galva American Legion Post, signing as a charter member in the summer of 1919 (original name Galva Service Club) His life membership was presented in January 1956. His services as post chaplain covered many years and before that he was adjutant and finance officer. also he was a chaplain of the 15th District and 3rd District (an area of 20 counties) When the famous Galva Drum & Bugle Corps was organized he was a charter member and he and his brother Elmer were responsible for the keeping of the uniforms in top condition. Later Axel was a secretary of the reunion group of Corps members. During the years the Armistice Service was held in Veteran's Memorial park, the prayer was given by Axel, he also participated in Memorial Day exercises here and in Bishop Hill and LaFayette. In the spring of 1932, Axel was elected second ward alderman and later he served as city treasurer one term and was city clerk about three years. His marriage to Helen Strand was solemnized , June 23, 1930, in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Arvid Strand, with the Rev C Gideon Carlson, Swedish Methodist pastor officiating. Mrs. Fahnstrom survives and now occupies an apartment in Lincoln House. Also he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Roy Alverson, (Hulda) and a nephew, Bill Alverson, both of Galva. His brother, Elmer F Fahnstrom died October 24, 1967, two other brothers preceded him in death, Oscar in 1912 and Carl Vannard in 1921. After the death of Axel's mother, Mrs. Alvid Lind assisted in the Fahnstrom home and her daughter Anny became a close friend of the Fahnstrom children. As Anny Safstrom she returned to Galva from Sweden in the fall of 1969 and there was a pleasant evening of reminiscing in Galva Grace Methodist church, that was about four years before her death on Christmas Eve in 1973. Services in charge of Johnson - Gill- Schuster chapel were held in the Assembly of God church, November 28, with the pastor, the Rev Robert Karjala officiating. Jesse Issacs of Kewanee, was soloist and Mrs. Karjala was accompanist. Military Rites were conducted by the American Legion post in Galva cemetery and bearers were John Girvin, Harry Norbom, Howard Graig, Ron Hepner, Wayne Abernathy and Vallie Farrar. Mrs. Fahnstrom's sister, Mrs. Evelyn Hawks came from New Jersey for the services. Lines from the Galvaland story in 1962. It is though he was still sitting down to talk things over with you personally, to offer strength, hope and above all, to bolster one's faith. Funeral rites will beheld at 2 pm today for Mrs Anna Louise Fahnstrom, 74, at Johnsons Chapel with Rev D A Bloomster, pastor of Victoria Methodist church and Rev Nils E Bengtson, pastor of Galva Messiah Lutheran church, officiating. Mrs Fahnstrom died at 7 o'clock Sunday morning at her home in Victoria after being in critical condition following a stroke suffered two weeks previously. The song service will include three duet numbers, "In the Sweet By and By", "Safe in the arms of Jesus" and "Gathering Home" in Swedish sung by Mrs Mary Johnson and Mrs Alphild Bengtson, accompanied by Mrs Verna Bowman Anderson. Pallbearers will be A L Fahnstrom, Elmer Fahnstrom, Edward Fahnstrom, Donald Fahnstrom, Stewart Fahnstrom andClarence Fahnstrom with burial in Galva Cemetery. NATIVE OF SWEDEN. Anna Louise Anderson was born June 23, 1870 in Sweden and came to United States, at the age of 17 years old, in 1887, settling first in Pennsylvania. Later she met Carl (Charlie) Fahnstrom in New York, whom she married in 1891. They first lived in Ossining, New York and in the year 1901, they moved to Galva to make their home. Following the accidental death of her husband in 1905 (Killed by a train in Galva) Mrs Fahnstrom returned to the East and settled in Worchester, Massachusetts. Fourteen years ago, she returned to Illinois to visit relatives and then decided to remain in the community. Surviving are three daughters, Anna Fahnstrom, who lived wih her in Victoria, Mrs Leonard Meline of Galesburg and Mrs C Johnson of Worchester, Massachusetts and two sons, Carl G Fahnstrom of Worchester, Mass and Capt Hjelmer M Fahnstrom, who is a chaplain in the service stationed in Iceland. Contributed by Susan Fahnstrom Benjamin A Fahnstrom, 78, died tuesday night in East Moline state hospital,where he had been a patient three years. Funeral servies will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 in Jonsons Chapel, with interment in Galva Cemetery. Benjamin Aaron Fahnstrom, one of nine children of Jonas & Ingrid Fahnstrom was born March 11, 1870 in Smaland, Sweden. He came to the United States at the age of 18 and worked as a farm hand in the Victoria vicinity until 1900, when he came to Galva. In 1894 he was united in marriage with Hattie Stewart, who died in 1899. In 1906, he was married to Mamie Burns of St Louis, who died in 1930. Mr Fahnstrom worked about 35 years in the blacksmith department of Hayes Plant. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 30 years and at one time a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are his son Stewart Fahnstrom of Galva and four brothers, George & Fred of Galva, Amil of Brady, Texas and Edwin of Victoria. MANY ATTENDED TRIBUTE SUNDAY FOR GALVA "VET" Carl V Fahnstrom, Died Friday in Sanitorium of Illiness Contracted in Army. Carl V Fahnstrom, of this city, a 27 year old veteran of the World war, succumbed friday in a sanitarium at Normal, Illinois, after a counter attack against tuberculosis in the Army forces of his country. He was the son of Andrew & Lisen Fahnstrom, a well known Galva business man. While serving as a sergeant in the headquarters company at Camp Travis, San Antonio, Texas, the young man was stricken with influenza which later developed into tuberculosis. Until his honorable discharge from the service on March 26, 1920, he was confined in Government hospitals at San Antonio and Denver. A few months after returning to Galva, his condition became serious and he was taken to Normal. The deceased entered the Army in May, 1918, at Camp Stanley, Texas, he srved with a calvary unit for three months, after which he was three months, after which he was transferred to the heavy artillery, at Camp Travis, where he served as a sergeant until the armistice was signed. Before three years with the company K Sixth Regiment, Illinios National Guard. Was born in Galva. Carl Vannard Fahnstrom was born in Galva on August 28, 1893, he was bought up and spent most of his life in this city. His education was obtained in the local schools at Browns Business College, Galesburg. In September 1918, he was united in marriage with Wilhelmina Van Auken, who with their one year old son, Carl, survives him. Beng widely known throughout this community the deceased leaves many friends to mourn his death. Until his health made it necessary for him to leave Galva, he was an active member of the American Legion of Galva. He remained unconscious until the last. After bidding his father, who was at his bedside, an affectionate farewell, he died. Beside his wife and son, the deceased is survived by his father, Andrew Fahnstrom, one sister, Miss Hulda Fahnstrom, two brothers, Elmer and Axel Fahnstrom and a number of relatives. His mother and a brother preceded him in death. Given Military Honors. A fitting tribute in the form of full military was accorded the deceased Sunday afternoon at the Swedish Methodist church. The service was largely attended by civilians and ex service men in uniform. Rev A G Peterson, pastor of the church, officiated. He was assisted by Rev J T Wigren and A R Rucks. An impressive musical progam was rendered, consisting of Alfred Lundberg, Robert Miller, Bert Hall and J F Bridgman, a quartet from the church, Mr & Mrs Eskill Johnson, Miss Cora Johnson and Osier Johnson and CF Schwab. Interment was made in the Galva Cemetery, the body was escorted to the grave by a uniformed unit of seventy five ex service men. Taps were blown by bugler Ed Callow. The pallbearers were: John Sundquist, Walter Larson, Will Leaf, Robert Peterson, Harold Flack and Clarence Swanson. Among those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr & Mrs Ed Fahnstrom and Mr & Mrs Fred Fahnstrom of Victoria, Mrs Andrew Norberg of Galesburg, Mrs Frank Van Auken of Kewanee, Charles Gibbs of Peoria and Mr & Mrs Charles Engstrand of La Fayette. Contributed by Susan Fahnstrom Funeral services for George Fahnstrom, 87, of Galva, who died at 12:12, Wednesday at Kewanee Public Hospital, will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Johnson - Gill - Schuster chapel. The Rev Axel Fahnstrom will officiate. Interment will be in Galva Cemetery. Visitation will be thursday evening from 7 to 9 pm. Mr Fahnstrom was admitted Oct 24, to the hospital and had been failing in health the past six months. He was born April 3, 1991 in Smaland, Sweden, one of nine children of Jonas & Ingrid Fahnstrom. He came to the United States at the age of 12 and was educated in the Victoria community. He farmed until he retired in 1957. He was married to Amanda Johnson, Oct 10, 1901 in Davenport. She died Dec 23, 1940. Surviving are two daughters Mrs James (Anna) Huffman and Mrs Esther Swanson, both of Galva, two sons Edward Herman and Carl Harvey, both of Galva, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, neices and nephews. Jonas Fahnstrom died at his home in this city, Monday night about 11 o'clock, aged 80 Years, 10 months, and 15 days , after an illness of several months. Mr Fahnstrom was born in Sweden and was a soldier in the regular army of Sweden. He came to this country twenty years ago. Mr Fahnstrom is survived by his wife, seven sons and one daughter. Submitted by: Susan Fahnstrom Last Saturday morning near the hour of six o'clock, occured the death of Mrs Jonas Fahnstrom, an aged resident of our city. The deceased has been an unusally active woman, usually in good health, and her passing away was sudden and unexpected. She was taken sick only a couple of days prior to her death. Ingrid Catharina Fahstrom, was born Sept 24, 1887, in Quenneberga, Kronsburga- Lan, Sweden and at the time of her death, lacked but 4 days of being eighty years old. She was united in marriage to Jonas Fahnstrom, Feb 20,1858, and to this union were born nine children, eight sons and one daughter. The family came to America in the year of 1893, coming to Victoria, Illinois, where they resided for a number of years, later moving to Galva. The Fahnstrom home is being spokenof by friends as one of the occasional ones where deep spiritual convictions prevailed. The husband and father was a strong robust man who in his prime would frequently walk from Victoria to Galva and back in order to attend the Lutheran chrch which was the home church of his boyhood days. The mother too, had the same strong faith and did all that time and strength would permit her for herchurch. Mrs Fahnstrom was a sacrificing woman, living a life of service for her large family. She has been a member of the Lutheran church since coming to Galva and the old friends and acquaintances who known her for years are unanimous in saying, she was truly a christian woman and a servant of God. The husband passed away some three yearsago at the advanced age of eighty -three years. At her death, Mrs Fahnstrom is survived by her one daughter, Miss Minne Fahnstrom of Galesburg and seven sons, namely Amel of Brady, Texas, George of South Dakota, Fred & Edwin of Victoria, and William, Andrew and Benjamin of Galva. One son Charles met with an accidental death a number of years ago. There also survives her one brother in Victoria and thirty -two grandchidren as well as other near relatives in the west. The sons from Dakota and Texas were unable to attend the mother's funeral. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church, Monday afternoon at half past two o'clock. Rev Benson, the pastor, officiating being assisted by Rev Englund of the Swedish Methodist Church. Mrs Lisen Elsie Fahnstrom died at her home in this city last Saturday forenoon, aged 52 years 16 days, after an illiness of over three years. She was born in Mobeda parish, Kronoberga Lan, Sweden, May 24th, 1859, was married to Andrew Erland Fahnstrom on May 21th, 1886. To them five children were born, four sons and one daughter, all of whom with their father are living. She united with the Swedish Methodist church, March 10th, 1895 and has been a good and faithful member. The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Sewdish Methodist Church and was conducted by Rev G A Nystrom. Mildred Fahnstrom, 84, widow of Elmer Fahnstrom, died in her home at 16 Northwest 4th Ave. , on April 29th, shortly after she had been released from the hospital. A daughter of Charles A and Sophia Cottier Craine, she was born June 25th 1901, on a farm two and one half miles west of Galva. She attended a nearby country school and school in Galva, as well as the former Kewanee Business College. For several years Mildred was head of the stenographic department in Hayes Pup & Planter office. On July 12th, 1928, she was united in marriage with Elmer Fahnstrom of Galva, in Aurora. Mr. Fahnstrom was a partner of his father, Andrew Fahnstrom, in the clothing store and tailor shop which bore the family name and his brother Axel also was a partner. In later years, Mildred assisted in the store on certain occasions. Mr. Fahnstrom died October 24th, 1967 and she had since occupied the home on Northwest 4th Ave. She was a member of Galva First United church, where she was treasurer many years. Also she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the past president parley. Mildred had been an active worker in the Red Cross and during Bloodmobile visits here. One brother, Maurice A Craine, of Galva, survives as well as one nephew, Elliott Craine of Ashland, Ohio. She was preceded by one brother and a nephew. Services May 1, in Johnson-Gill-Schuster chapel were conducted by the Rev Dan Buck, of First United church, organist was Dorothy Talbot. Interment was in Galva cemetery and bearers were; Leon Lewin, John Girvin, Harold Smith, Lawrence Ericson, Ed Miller and Dwain Warner. Funeral Services for Miss Minnie Fahnstrom, 61, who passed away Saturday in Galesburg, were conducted sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Johnson chapel here, in charge was Rev A W Lundeen, pastor of Swedish M E Church. Two duets were given by Eskill Johnson and Oscar Johnson "Jesus, Lover of my Soul" and "Gathering Home" with Elmer Borg as accompanist. Body bearers were six nephews of the deceased: Elmer Fahnstrom and Axel Fahnstrom, Herman and Stewart Fahnstrom of Galva and Donald Fahnstromand Edward Fahnstrom of Victoria. Wilhelmina Fahnstrom was born June 24, 1873 in Sweden and came to America in 1893, with her parents Jonas & Ingrid Fahnstrom and two younger brothers, George and Amel Fahnstrom. She resided in the Victoria vicinity for many years and about 1917 went to Galesburg where she had been employed in the Galesburg Free Kindergarten school on West Simmons street, giving 17 years of faithful service. The superintendant, Mrs Harrington, who has headed the school for the past 21 years, was present at the services on sunday, together with two other teachers who had been with the school 13 to 15 years. Deceased was the only sister of eight brothers, six of whom were present at the services sunday: Andrew, Benjamin, William, George of Galva and Fred Fahnstrom of Victoria, Amel Fahnstrom of Texas was unable to attend the funeral.One brother, Carl (Charlie) was accidentally killed by a train here, 30 years ago, his widow Anna Louise Fahnstrom was present Sunday. Contributed by Susan Fahnstrom Oscar Fahnstrom was born in Hjortsberga, Kronoberga Lan, Sweden, May 18th, 1887 and died in Galva, Illinois, December 23rd,, 1912, being in his departure 25 years, 7 months and 6 days old. He had been in failing health for about two years. He came to America with his parents when he was only one year old and resided in Galva the rest of his life except two years when he lived in Waterloo, Iowa. Three years ago he enlisted in th US militia and was made sergeant and served with honor. Oscar was of a quiet nature and very helpful with the home duties during his mothers illiness and since her death. He was mourned by his father, Andrew Fahnstrom, one sister and three brothers and many other relatives and friends. The funeral services was held at the Swedish Methodist church Christmas Day in the afternoon. Many of Oscar Fahnstrom's comrades were present and the church was filled with sympathetic friends. Rev Nils W Bard had charge and spoke in the Swedish language and Rev J W. Swenson made an address in English. The choir sang two beautiful selections. The soldiers gave the salute at the Cemetery. Funeral services for William Fahnstrom, 74, who passed away Monday evening at the home of his neice and husband, Mr & Mrs Roy Alverson (Hulda Fahnstrom) were conducted at 2 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon from Swedish M E Church, in charge of the pastor, Rev C H Malmquist. Song service was given by Mrs Eskill Johnson and Mrs Godfrey Jacobs consisting of a Swedish solo by Mrs Johnson and two duets, "Abide with Me" and "No Night There". Body bearers were six nephews of the deceased, interment was in Galva Cemetery. Mr William Fahnstrom had been in failing health for the past three years, his condition growing worse during the past few weeks. He passed away at 10 o'clock, monday at the home of Mr & Mrs Roy Alverson. William Fahnstrom was born April 18, 1860 in Sweden, the eldest of nine children born to Jonas & Ingrid Fahnstrom. He came to America at the age of 19 years old and first located in the Victoria vicinity. Thirty five years ago, Mr Fahnstrom came to Galva, where he secured employment as a blacksmith in the Hayes factory. He continued there for 30 years, retiring five years ago. Mr Fahnstrom had never married and for the past 14 years had made his home with his neice Hulda Alverson and her husband Roy Alverson. Surviving are six brothers, as follows: Andrew, Ben, George Fahnstrom of Galva, Edwin and Fred Fahnstrom of Victoria and Amel Fahnstrom of Texas. The only sister Miss Minnie Fahnstrom passed away in Galesburg, June 30 of this year and another brother Carl (Charlie) Fahnstrom died after being hit by a train in Galva, 30 years ago. FIERCE LAID TO REST Funeral of Phietta Fierce Held on Friday Afternoon From Late Home At 1:00 o’clock on Friday afternoon at her late residence southeast of Cambridge was held the funeral of Mrs. Phietta Fierce. The services were in charge of Rev. W.H. Witter of the M.E. Church. The music was rendered by a quartet composed of J.B. and L.A. Taylor, Mrs. Edith Sanquist and Miss Zella Taylor. The pall bearers were: A.J. Record, L.R. Taylor, H.J. Wiedenhoeft, R.B. Wilson, F.S. Record, an D.L. Cowden. Many beautiful floral offerings from loving and sympathetic friends were in evidence. Internment was made in the family lot in the Cambridge cemetery. Mrs. Phietta Fierce, wife of the late Wilson Fierce, died at the home of her son, W. Day Fierce in Cambridge township, Henry county, on Tuesday evening at 10:15, January 12, 1909, at the age of 81 years and 28 days. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Simeon Gibbs and was born in Athens county, Ohio, August 14, 1827. In 1846 she was united in marriage to Mr. Simeon Biggerstaff. To them were born nine children, five sons and four daughters. Two of these have passed from this life, one son, William and one daughter, Mrs. Hannah Anderson, the mother of Mr. Samuel Anderson, of Ulah. Those living are Mrs. Mary Wilson, of Afton, Iowa, Mrs. Lettie Herrold, of Creighton, Missouri, Mrs. Jane Kelly of Mineral, Illinois, John of North Dakota, Bert, of Urich, Missouri, G.W. of Afton, Iowa and Simeon of Kansas City, Missouri. In 1871 she was again united in marriage to Mr. Wilson Fierce. To them was born one son, W. Day, with whom she has made her home for several years, Mr. Fierce having passed away June 7, 1905. Mrs. Fierce came to Illinois about 1850 and settled near Knoxville, Knox county, and came to Henry county in 1872. She leaves to mourn her loss eight children and eighteen grandchildren. Those who are here of her children are Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Herrold, Bert, George W., and W. Day aand two grandchildren. Samuel Anderson and Vivian. Mrs. Fierce made a profession of faith when she was sixteen years of age and joined the United Brethren church. After coming here she united with the Baptist church of which she was a member at the time of her death. Mrs. Fierce was a woman of great faith and was a great student of the scriptures and was a theologian of no mean order. Many a time has the Minister of the Word found himself confronted with questions of her asking that required deep mental study to give an answer. She has been blind for nearly twenty five years but her faith in God never wavered. She was always delighted to talk about the heavernly rest and the white robed company. Source and date not given. Biggerstaff] Eliza Ford called Wed. at 84 years Mrs. Eliza Buff Ford, 84, died at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, at her home, 501 Roosevelt ave. She had been in failing health for some time. Funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, in chapel at Cavanagh and Schueneman funeral home, with Rev. Ludwig C. Emigholz, pastor of First Congregational church in charge. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday night. Mrs. Ford was born Feb. 20, 1864 at Horsley Heath, Staffordshire, England. She was married to Alfred Ford there Feb. 1, 1885, and they came to the United States the next year, making their home at What Cheer, Ia. In 1901 they came to Kewanee and the home has been here since that time. She was one of the oldest members of the First Congregational church of this city. Surviving are three sons, Alfred of Chicago, Ernest J. and George, and a daughter, Mrs. Alice Ford Anderson, all of Kewanee. There are five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Her husband died in February, 1946, and a daughter, Hazel, died several years ago. Fosnes of Montevideo, Minn., formerly of Geneseo. Mrs. Fosnes died in her home Friday, July 30, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Fosnes, the former Myrtle Metcalf, attended Geneseo schools. Her father, Rev. Henry Metcalf, served as minister of the Geneseo Methodist church at one time. Mrs. Fosnes was Latin instructor in the Geneseo high school from 1908 to 1911. Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Jenson of Detroit Lake, Minn., and Mrs. W.C. Wall of Winlock, Wash., and one brother who lives in Alaska. Fowler, long time resident of Kewanee, will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, in Cavanagh and Schueneman funeral home chapel. Dr. Loyal M. Thompson, pastor of First Methodist church will conduct the service and burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday night. Mrs. Fowler died Wednesday afternoon at Kewanee Public hospital where she had been a patient for five weeks. Complications that resulted from a broken hip caused her death. Nannie Bunn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Denton Bunn, was born in Bureau county. She came to Kewanee with her parents in 1892 and her home has been here since that time. She was a member of the First Methodist church. She was married to John Fowler of Kewanee, in 1900. He died in 1940 and their only child, a son, died at age off four months. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Dell German, Mrs. David C. Mosgrove and Mrs. Austa Wipert, all of Kewanee, and a brother, Will Bunn, living in Great Falls, Montana. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.
