FRED HAACK SUCCUMBS MAY 27 Six Children Survive; Last Rites To Be Held May 29 In Local Church Death summoned Mrs. Albertena Haack at about 5 o'clock Thursday morning, May 27th in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. Herman Eichhorn after an extended illness. Mrs. Haack was born in Heddesheim, Baden, Germany on March 17, 1859 and at the time of her death was aged 84 years. She was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Protestant church in Germany. She was the youngest child of Michael and Katherine Wolf Masengarb. In September, 1875, she accompanied her mother and brother, Adam Masengarb to the United States, coming direct to Geneseo. She was married in Princeton, Ill, on (Dec.?) 6, 1877 to Wilhelm Wendelin Haaga. For two years they made their home in Tiskilwa, later moving to Moline, where Mr. Haaga died on Feb. 2, 1882. Two children were born to this union. They are Louise, now Mrs. Herman Eichhorn and William W. Haaga. On February 25, 1886 she was married in Geneseo to Frederich T. Haack, to which union six children were born. Mr. Haack died in Geneseo on April 25, 1870. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Louise Eichhorn, Mrs. Margaret Young and Herman Haack, of Geneseo; William Haaga, of Denver; Carl Haack of Detroit and Albert Haack, of Peoria. Two children, Katherine and George Haack died in infancy. She also leaves nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Eichhorn home and at ?:30 in Concordia Lutheran church with Rev. H. J. Elling officiating. Mrs. Haack was a member of this church. Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery. Contributed by Sue Williams CONESVILLE-Myrtle Hamilton of Conesville, a retired cook at the Conesville High School, died Friday at her home after a short illness. She was 82. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Conesville Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Sunday at the funeral home. A general memorial has been established. Pallbearers will be Bill Hesseltine, Brian Wolfe, Joe Gerot, Larry Suiter, Steve Hamilton and Kevin Morgan. Mrs. Hamilton was born Feb. 2, 1903 in Kewanee, Ill, a daughter of Thomas and Alice Woodward Martin. She married Elza Hamilton on Feb 2, 1922 in Leon, Iowa. He died in 1973. Survivors include three daughters, Carmen (Mrs. Robert) Goldesberry (sic) of Denton, Texas, Ethel (Mrs. Cleo) Gerot of Riverside and Mary Singleton of Conesville; three sons, Harley and Marvin, both of Conesville, and Donald of Buffalo, 33 grandchildren; 38 great granchildren; one great great grandchild and one foster granddaughter; five brothers, Harold of Muscatine, William of Grandview, Arthur of North Liberty, and Eugene of Orlando, Fla., and two sisters, Alice Yotter of West Liberty and Elizabeth (Mrs. Charles) Keef of Omaha, Neb. Funeral services for Alexander Hampton, CB&Q Crossing flagman who died Wednesday in the Public Hospital will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon in the chapel of Palmer and Snare and Dooley Funeral Home. Burial wil be in Wethersfield Cemetery. Friends may call at the home 905 Dewey Ave. Friday. Mr. Hampton's death resulted from an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Hampton has been with the CB&Q railroad for many years and for the past eighy years was engaged as flagman. A part of that time he was flagman at the Main st. crossing and for the past four years has been stationed at the Tremont st. crossing. He had written a number of poems, specializing in poetry concerning dangerout railroad crossings. Mr. Hampton was born Oct. 6, 1880 in Poplar City Mason Co. Ill and was married to Nellie Curl Oct. 24, 1900 in Dewitt. He had resided in Kewanee 27 yrs. Surviving are the widow, nine children Mrs. Carrie Johnson of Galesburg, Mrs. Bertha Vick, Ridott, Mrs. Alice Johnson, Thomas Edward, Joseph Herbert, Alexander Hampton Jr., Louis Bernard, Nellie Loretta, Edna Marie Hampton, mother Mrs. John E. Rockwell St. this morning after having three papalytic strokes. Mr. Hampton ws born in LaSalle County, Illinois on December 21, 1858. In 1879 he was married to Mariah Reynolds and to them wee born five children. Since 1907 he has been employed in the Kewanee Boiler Plant. Those who survive Mr. Hampton are his wife, two daughters Mrs. Ed (Mary) Rosenow, Mrs. Sarah Lisenbee, both of Kewanee, Illinois. 3 sons Alexander, Thomas Hampton, both of Kewanee, Wren of Peoria. The paper had it as Thomas Curl Sr. It was really John.] Thelma Marie Hampton little daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alexander Hampton, 905 Dewey Ave. died at 5 a.m. as a result of an attack of Influenza Pneumonia. The little girl was 3 yrs. old on Sept 23, of last yr. This is the 2nd death in the family as the result of Influenza Pneumonia. Laurence E. Hampton, the little 11 month old brother of Thelma passed away Mon morning at 8 a.m., just 48 hrs. before the death of his sister. The surviving relatives include the parents. Mr. & Mrs. Alexander Hampton, a brother Thomas and 4 sisters. Carry May, Lilly Edna, Bertha May, and Alice Faye. Mr. Hanley was an old resident of Little York and was a civil war veteran. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Methodist church at Little York with Rev. "Ted" Hansen, 82, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, husband of the former Phyllis Ford of Geneseo, died Tuesday, January 31, 1989. A Memorial service was held Friday, February 3, in the Rose Chapel of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, of which he was a member. Mr. Hansen was a retired co-owner of Midwestern Drilling, Inc. He was a member of Geary Masonic Lodge and Tulsa Scottish Rite. His wife was born and raised in Geneseo, the daughter of the late C.D. Ford and sister of Robert Ford and the late Howard Ford. She taught school in the Geneseo area before marrying Mr. Hansen and subsequently moving to Tulsa. Mr. Hansen is survived by his wife; a daughter, Phyllis Gay Ecton of Mission Kansas; a son, Thomas J. of Fort Smith, Arkansas; and six grandchildren. She was born Dec. 2, 1882 in Kewanee, the daughter of Richard and Eliza Lamb Woodward. She married Hardy on Aug 1, 1903 in Kewanee. He died June 8, 1952. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Merle (Eliza) Huff, Pottstown, and Mrs. Harold (Mae) Moon, Annawan; 21 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, 32 great, great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Cleo (Ethel) Boyer, Salinas, Kan., and a brother, Dewey Woodward, Moline. She was preceded in death by a daughter, a son and four grandchildren. Mrs. Hardy was the oldest charter member of the Kewanee Moose Lodge, and also a charter member of the Flemish American Club, Kewanee. Hardy, 74, of Annawan, died Sunday afternoon at St. Francis hospital in Kewanee. Hardy was born June 8, 1878, at Blandinville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hardy. He moved to Kewanee in 1899 and came to Annawan about three years ago. He was a retired Boiler corp moulder. He married Bertha Woodward in Kewanee in 1903. He was a member of the Latter Day Saints church of Kewanee and a former member of the Modern Woodmen and the Eagles. At one time he was president of the Moulders union local. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. May Moon of Annawan, Mrs. Eliza Huffs (sic) of Peoria and Mrs. Pearl Skrinski of Kewanee; a son James of Kewanee; a brother Carl of Blandinville; 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Herman and Bueford Martin are sons of his nephew John Martin.] HENANDER, Bengta Larsdotter (Mrs. Andrew Henander) Mrs. Andrew Henander, for more than fifty years a highly esteemed resident of Geneseo, passed away at her home on East Main street last Thursday forenoon, April 20, 1916, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 26 days, following an illness of many months’ duration. Mrs. Henander was born in Almskane, Sweden in 1845, and in that country her younger years were passed. At the age of 19 years, in 1864, she came to America locating at Galesburg. A year later, she came to Geneseo and in this city she has made her home ever since. On August 12, 1870, she was married to Andrew Henander, also a native of Sweden, and who survives her. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive. They are Luther Henander, Victor Henander, Mrs. Alice Borkgren and Mrs. Nora Setterberg, all of Geneseo. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren. Although Mrs. Henander was called upon to endure heart-crushing sorrows during the ealy years of her life, including the accidental drowning of her father and two brothers which left her almost alone in the world, and although she was called upon to endure suffering and sickness in the latter years of her life, she remained steadfast in the Christian faith and passed triumphantly into the other life. Funeral services were held at the home of the deceased at 2:30 o’clock on Sunday afternoon and at the Swedish Lutheran church at 3 o’clock. The Rev. E. W. Magnusson officiated. Henander, aged 87, passed away at 2:45 am, Friday, Aug. 13, 1937, at her home, 624 East Main St. She had been blind and partially deaf the past four years, and seriously ill the past two months. The deceased was formerly Miss Catherine Johanses and was born in Sweden, March 13, 1850. She came to this country in 1881, settling in Moline. She had married a Mr. Nelson in Sweden and after his death was married to Charles Burgstone in Clinton, Iowa. Upon his death she was married to A. J. Henander in Geneseo, Nov. t, 1916. Mrs. Henander was a member of the First Lutheran church and was active in the Martha Aid society and women's missionary society as long as her health permitted. She is survived by the husband and two sisters, one in Sweden and one in Denmark. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o clock in Sweeney memorial chapel and at 3:00 in the First Lutheran church with the Rev. W. X. Magnuson officiating. He was a member of Alta Lodge 748, Af&AM. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Janet Henander of Peoria and Mrs. Sue Williams of Brighton; and two sisters, Mrs. Donald (Violet) Brennan of Farmington and Mrs. Dorothy Himmelman of Geneseo. Henander, 59, of 236 East Second street, Geneseo, died Friday morning, June 14 (1962), in Moline Lutheran hospital following an extended illness. He had been hospitalized for the past four days. He was born August 22, 1902 in the Geneseo area, a son of Luther and Katie Henander. He received his education in Geneseo area schools and was a life resident of the community except for 10 years in Farmington. On February 10, 1934, he married Mildred Borkgren in Geneseo. He was a dragline operator for the Midland Electric Coal Corporation. Mr. Henander was a member of the First Methodist church. Surviving are his wife; a son, Gary at home; his mother, Mrs. Katie Henander of Geneseo; five brothers, Ralph, Elon and John, all in Colorado, Arthur in California, and Guy in Arkansas and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Dorothy) Himmelman of Geneseo and Mrs. Donald (Violet) Brennan of Farmington. She was active with the Peoria Area Blind Peoples Center and bowled with the Peoria Blind Bowlers. She served on the Peoria Council for the Blind and Handicapped and was active at the center for Independent Living in Peoria. Henander, 86, of 624 West Elk street, Geneseo, died at 12:05 Wednesday morning, February 10, in the Henry County convalescent home, south of Geneseo, where she had been a patient for three weeks. She had been ill for some time. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 13, in the Myers funeral home in Geneseo with the Rev. E. A. KATIE HENADER RITE IS HELD AT MYERS Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Henander, 86, were held Saturday afternoon, February 13, in the Myers funeral home. Mrs. Henander died Wednesday morning, February 10, in the Henry county convalescent home. The Rev. E. A. Schmidt, pastor of the Grace Evangelical United Brethren church, officiated. Hubert Obrecht was soloist and Mrs. Dale Sieben, organist. Pallbearers were Gilbert Munter, Lester Roos, Kenneth and Raymond Chrisop, Irwin Borkgren and Dwayne Ellingsworth. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Contributed by Sue Williams [d. 02/10/1965] Geneseo this week is called to mourn the passing of one of its native sons, Luther Emanuel Henander, which occurred at Colfax, Iowa, Saturday, September 7, 1918, following an extended period of illness. Mr. Henander has been a patient sufferer and with his friends had hoped to obtain relief by going to Colfax which he did about a month ago. With the best of efforts on the part of his physicians to aid his recovery, the end came last Saturday. Mr. Henander was a man of excellent traits of character, was industrious and an upright citizen and enjoyed the esteem and high regard of all in the community. The heartfelt sympathy of the community goes forth to the sorrowing family. Luther Emanual Henander was born in Geneseo August 25, 1878. He became a member of the Swedish Lutheran congregation of this city by confirmation on May 22, 1891. He was married on February 1, 1900, to Miss Katie Gerstner, of this city. To this union were born eleven children, of whom two died in infancy. The surviving children are Ralph, Harold, Roland, Elon, John, Arthur, Guy, Dorothy and Violet. There also survives a brother Victor, living at Rock Island, and two sisters, Mrs. Nora Setterburg and Mrs. Alice Borkgren, and the father Andrew Henander of this city. The mother passed away two years ago. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. E. W. Magnusson and Rev. E. K. Hershey Monday at the Presbyterian church at 2:30 o'clock. Henander Rolland Henander, 57, of Fort Collins, Colorado, a former Geneseo resident died Friday morning, December 1, in a hospital at Fort Collins. Services were held Monday afternoon, December 4, in Myers funeral home, Geneseo, with the Rev. E. A. Schmidt, pastor of the Grace EUB church, officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Henander was born September 27, 1904, near Geneseo to Kattie and Luther E. Henander. In 1926 he married Hazel Mahan. He moved to Colorado in 1930 and farmed near Limon until ill health overtook him. He had resided at the Cody Rest Home in Fort Collins for the last five years and had been hospitalized three weeks prior to his death. Surviving are his mother, Katie Henander; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Foster of Denver, Coorado and Mrs. Marion LaRue of Seward, Pennsylvania; six brothers, Ralph of Denver, Colorado, Harold of Geneseo, Elon of Fort Collins, Colorado, John of Limon, Colorado, Arthur of Walnut Creek California, and Guy of Bull Shoals, Arkansas and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Himmelman of Geneseo and Mrs. Donald Brennan of Farmington. His wife, father and a daughter in infancy preceded him in death. She is the sister of Marian Hopkey and Dean Gotthardt, both of Geneseo. Services were Saturday in Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Burial was in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to New Life Fellowship Church, Moline, of which Mrs. Hipskind was a member. Neva Gotthardt married Howard Hipskind in 1946 in Rock Island. He died Oct. 28, 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Yanez, East Moline; sons Richard, Moline, and Kenneth and Gary, both of East Moline; nine grandchildren; and her sister and brother. Transcribed by Melissa Parpart Peters, Omaha NE Erlan Holstrom of Cambridge is Called By Death (Special to the Star-Courier) CAMBRIDGE, May 10 -- Erlan Holstrom, 71, died at his home on Main Street at 9:30 last night following a stroke. Mr. Holstrom was born in Sweden June 5, 1856, and came to America when he was 20 years old. He was married June 18, 1890, to Ella Chinberg in Kansas. For the last year and a half Mr. Holstrom had been making his home in Cambridge and with the exception of 16 years spent in Kansas, he had resided in this community, engaging in farming. Mr. Holstrom was a member of the Lutheran church. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Freeberg, Cambridge; Mrs. M. E. Zinser, Chicago; Mrs. D. L. Ott, Denver. He also leaves one son, Carl of Chicago; two brothers, Nels of Woodhull and Ed of Galesburg and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery. Interment will be at Syringa Gardens, Dry Creek, Boise, Idaho. She was born April 7, 1898 at Annawan, Illinois and attended the schools in the area. She attended Galva Business College at Kewanee, Illinois. She married Carl Vannard Fahnstrom, son of Andrew & Lisen Fahnstrom, in Galva, in 1918, he died in 1921 of TB, which he contacted while serving in World War I. They had one son, Carl William Fahnstrom born February 28, 1920. Wilhelmina married Alvord Hubbard on November 4, 1940 at Las Vegas. She moved to Boise in 1948 and had lived here since. Survivors include a son, Carl William Fahnstrom of Boise, a sister Flora Engstrand, Galva, five grandchildren. five great grandchildren and a nephew. Huckins, long a resident of this city, and known throughout the state as a successful horse buyer and seller, passed away at the family home, 207 South Tremont street at 8 o'clock this morning. Scores of friends throughout Kewanee and vicinity will receive the announcement of the passing of this well known citizen with regret. For more than a year and a half previous to his summons, Mr. Huckins had been in poor health, his illness being of an aggravating and lingering nature. Pernicious anemia was the cause of his death. For the last five months his illness necessitated confinement to his bed. At times he would improve, but for several weeks past he had been in a serious condition. His death was not entirely unexpected. Mr. Huckins had devoted the greater part of his life since reaching manhood to the horse business. He was prominently identified as a buyer and seller. At the opening of the war in 1861 Mr. Huckins became engaged in buying cavalry and artilliery horses. In this business he was associated with W. P. Buswell and Henry Buswell of Neponset. During this period Mr. Huckins and his partners bought for the government three thousand horses which were used at the time of war. Mr. Huckins and Henry Buswell of Neponset cleared the land east of the Dr. Priestman home in Neponset, which consisted of three acres and sold it into town lots. After disolving partnership, Mr. Huckins bought horses for himself. While a resident of Kewanee, Mr. Huckins shipped horses to Chicago and Galesburg for a long time. He shipped to the firm of Welch and Hall for twenty five years. Alonzo B. Huckins was born at Stanstead, Province of Quebec, Canada, Sept. 29, 1838. He came to this country May 14, 1855, settling at Osceola. Mr. Huckins took employment with General P. Buswell, who was then engaged in general store business. He was employed by Mr. Buswell for one year at Osceola. Mr. Buswell then built a store at Neponset where Mr. Huckins was employed for some time. It was not long after that, Mr. Huckins became a partner in the firm, Buswell, Blake & Huckins, who were engaged in horse buying and selling. Alonzo B. Huckins was united in marriage with Miss Mary Ott Hewitt, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. C. A. Hewitt, September 26, 1866. The ceremony was performed at the home of Rev. Mr. Hewitt, who was the Baptist minister of Neponset. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Huckins. Three passed away in infancy. Two children who survive to mourn the death are Miss Ruby Huckins, at home, and Leon C. Huckins of Chicago. Mr. Huckins' wife preceded him in death two years ago last February 17. Mr. Huckins was one of a family of ten children. His brothers, John, George, Michael James, and Azro, have passed away. Two sisters, Lucy and Clarice, are also dead. He leaves two sisters to mourn his death, namely, Lavina, now Mrs. L. A. Wallace of Chicago, and Mrs. Hannah Stone of Neponset. Mr. Huckins was a resident of Neponset from 1856 to 1886. He moved to Chicago where he lived on Grand Boulevard for one year and a half. He had made this city his home from 1892 until his death. He was a member of the First Baptist church with which he became affiliated at Neponset. Mr. Huckins was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of this city. Hulstrom, who resided 4 miles southwest of Galva, passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Kewanee Sunday, August 28th, aged seventy-six years. Mr. Hulstrom had been in poor health for several weeks. He is survived by a wife and nine children as follows: Emil, Fred and Mrs. C. A. Naslund, living near Galva; Mrs. Wm. Hunter and Mrs. Verne Hutchinson of Geneseo, and the Misses Elma and Lillian and Earl and Harold at home. The funeral was held this afternoon at one o'clock at the Galva Swedish Lutheran church.
