Obituaries & Death Notices PAPENTHIEN, Anna Sister Anna Popenthin (sic) was born June 19th, 1873 in Lee county, Ill, and died March 17th, 1890 in Geneseo, Henry county, Ill., aged 16 years, 8 months, and 28 days. Her death was the result of a relapse of the influenza and inflammation of the bowels. Sister Popenthin was converted and united with the Evangelical association one year ago. Her religious experience was bright and she has been every since an earnest Christian, wherefore she did manifest as she approached death the blessedness of a divine Savior. About the last she said was "My blessed Jesus." She leaves sorrowing parents, one brother, and three sisters. Funeral services in the Loraine church. J. W. Mohr, pastor, officiating. Papenthein) was the daughter of John & Dorothea Maria Schimmelman Poppenthein.) Mrs. Eva K. Papenthien, 85, of 226 North Center street, Geneseo, died Saturday evening, November 23, in the Hammond-Henry hospital, Geneseo, where she had been a patient two days. She had been ill a year. Eva Gerstner was born December 28, 1869, in Germany, daughter of Valentine and Margaret Masengarb Gerstner, and came to the United States at the age of 2. She was reared and educated in Loraine township and spent the last 60 years in the Geneseo area. On February 23, 1888, she was married to John F. Papenthien in Loraine township. He died in 1939. She was a member of the Grace Evangelical United Brethren church, the Women’s Society of World Service of the church and the woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Surviving are a son, L. E. Papenthien of West Liberty, Iowa; five daughters, Mrs. R. L. Harms of Muscatine, Mrs. H. J. Drew of Cloquet, Minnesota, Mrs. D. S. Nicely of Geneseo, Mrs. C. W. Temple of Redwood City, California and Mrs. William Boetger of San Mateo, California; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Gerstner of Hardtner, Kansas and four sisters, Mrs. Katie Henander, Mrs. Dena Munter and Mrs. Mary Smith, all of Geneseo and Mrs. James Ellingsworth of Colona. Her parents, husband, four sisters and two grandchildren preceded her in death. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, November 26, in Grace EUB church with the Rev. E. A. Schmidt, pastor, officiating. Clyde Walter was soloist with Mrs. Dale Sieben at the organ. Pallbearers were Kenneth and Raymond Chrisop, Gilbert Munter, Lester Roos, Dwayne Ellingsworth and Harold Henander. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Contributed by Sue Williams d. Nov. 23, 1957 John Papenthien was born in Germany, Feb. 11, 1838, and died in Geneseo, February 9, 1919, aged 80 years, 11 months, and 28 days. The deceased came to this country from Germany in 1850(?) and settled at Red Oak, in Bureau county. From there he moved to Loraine township, this county. He was engaged in farming until moving to Geneseo about twenty-nine years ago. His wife died more than twelve years ago and since he has lived with one or the other of the children. He is preceded in death by six children. There remains to mourn his death one son, John F. Papenthien, Jr. of Geneseo, two daughters, Mrs. Caroline Weber of Geneseo, and Mrs. Augusta Metzner of Ritzville, Washington. The deceased is also survived by a brother, Fred Papenthien, living at Mulwaukee, who is now seriously ill. There are twenty-four grandchildren and forty-two great-grandchildren. The departed made a profession of the Christian faith at a camp meeting while he was living at Red Oak. Later he became a member of the Loraine United Evangelical church. On coming to Geneseo he found it hard to adapt himself to the church life of the community and because of his growing deafness he could not gain much benefit from the public services. While his wife lived, they together attended the Geneseo Lutheran church. His approaching end he realized and made all necessary arrangements for his own funeral. And after days of waiting, he fell on sleep, and his spirit took its flight. The body was interred in the Loraine cemetery. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Caroline Weber, on __Russell?______ street, and the services were conducted by Rev. E. K. Hershey. Papenthien Friday Funeral Services for John F. Papenthien, who died Wednesday, October 25, were held Friday afternoon of last week at 2:30 at Myers chapel and at 3 o’clock at the Grace Evangelical church, Rev. G. W. Engelter, officiating. A quartet composed of Darrell Johnson, C. F. McConnell, Arthur Sieben and Lyle Obrecht furnished musical numbers accompanied by Mrs. George Smith on the organ. Interment was in Oakwood cemetery. Pallbearers were Raymond Harms, Herbert Drew, D. S. Nicely, Harley Obrecht, William Boetger, sons-in-law of the deceased and Raymond Nicely, grandson of Mr. Papenthien. PATRICK --------- Aged Women Dies Friday At Galva; Was Native of New York ---- Mrs. Clara Crain Patrick, a resident of Geneseo community for many years, died early Friday morning, April 26 at Galva, where she had been spending the past several months. She was aged 82 years. Clara Davis Patrick was born in New York State on March 6, 1858 and was the daughter of Nathanial and Clarissa Satterly Davis. She attended the Geneseo schools and was married here to George Crain. For many years the Crains resided west of Geneseo on the farm now occupied by the Maurice Gernant family. After Mr. Crain's death in 1895, Mrs. Crain went to Mena, Arkansas, where she resided a few years and where she was married to William Patrick, who preceded her in death. Ten year ago Mrs. Patrick went to Argo, Illinois, where she resided with her son until coming to Geneseo and for some time make her home with her niece, Mrs. Grant Ollson. Surviving are one son, Charles Crain, of Argo; one granddaughter, Mrs. A. G. McClain, of Houston, Texas; the niece, Mrs. Olson; a nephew, Will Davis, of Altoona, Iowa. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Myers chapel, Rev. Carlos Dunagan, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Pallbearers were Allen Ellingsworth, C.M. Sette, Albert Firch, Herbert Roesner, Fred Butzer and Albert Jaquet. Lynn Center, Sept 5---Funeral services for Otto A Peterson 74, who died Saturday evening in his home in Lynn township after illness of three weeks, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 in the home and at 2 in Swedona Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Swedona cemetery. The Rev Philip Ekblad will officiate. Mr. Peterson was born and lived all his life on the same farm in Lynn township. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Swan Peterson and was born May 7, 1864. He married Sophia Anderson March 6, 1895. For twenty-two years Mr. Peterson was assessor in Lynn township. He was also highway commissioner nine years. He was a member of the Swedona church. Surviving are the widow; two sons, Walter of Sherrard and Milton of Lynn; three daughters, Mrs. Myra Bowman of Lynn, Mrs. Mildred Sellers of Moline and Mrs. Myrtle Olson of Rock Island; one brother, Elbert of Toledo, Ore., and two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Trohl of Leavenworth, Kas., and Mrs. Helen Sundell of Wakefield, Neb. In 1816, with her parents, she moved to Livingston county, N.Y. Nov. 6th, 1834, she was united in marriage with Leander Pickard. This union was blessed by a family of twelve children-seven sons and five daughters. She died Thursday, March 9th, 1893. The husband and five daughters survive the wife and mother, the seven sons, having preceded her, one dying in the army, giving his life for his country.Deceased came to Henry county with her family in 1869, settling in Atkinson which has since been her home. Deceased was converted and united with the M.E. church in 1835 and remained an active and worthy member till death. She was for 29 years a member. Funeral services were held at the Atkinson M.E. church, conducted by Rev. M. A. Head, of Rock Island, who chose for his text Phil. 1-21: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."The interment was at Grand View cemetery. Funeral Services were held Monday, August 1, at Wright chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral homes, Geneseo, with the Rev. Joseph Martin officiating. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Foundation. Phyllis McHenry was born September 10, 1907, in Phenix township, the daughter of Francis and Maude Decker McHenry. She married Maurice Lewis November 10, 1927, Geneseo. He died April 29, 1961. She later married Walter Pobanz May 18, 1967, Port Byron. Mrs. Pobanz was a member of First Presbyterian church, Geneseo, Clementine Chapter 562, Eastern Star, Colona; and a past worthy matron of Atkinson chapter, Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by a husband, granddaughter and sister. Survivors include her husband; sons, Robert Lewis, Walcott, Iowa and Royce Lewis, East Moline; daughters, Roberta Reiling, Atkinson, and Barbara Rahn and Judy Pullman, both of Geneseo; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a stepson, Kent Pobanz, Baldwin, Missouri; two stepgrandchildren; and four step-greatgrandchildren.
