WEIDLEIN, Andrew

Andrew Weidlein, lifelong respected citizen of Geneseo and the community southwest of here, passed away at his home on West North street Sunday forenoon following an extended period of ill health. Mr. Weidlein was in his eighty-first year and infirmities incident to his advanced age were the cause of death. The wife preceded him in death three months to the day and her passing is believed to have hastened Mr. Weidlein's death.

Mr. Weidlein was highly esteemed man in this community which has been his home for about seventy years. His career in its entirety was one of integrity and uprightness, and influenced as was his life with high ideals, and of an excellent mind he was able to make his career one of paramount success, not only amassing a handsome estate, and providing always liberally for his family, yet withal not overlooking the more important matter of living the life of a Christian. In the active years of his career, while operating his farm in Osco township he was called upon to serve as supervisor and also served on the school board.

Born in Bedford, PA., April 16, 1840, he came west with his parents in 1851, the father and mother, John and Ella Nora Weidlein, locating on a farm in Edford township and finally settling on a farm in Osco township, near Morristown.

In 1864, Mr. Weidlein was united in marriage with Sarah Elizabeth Conrad, of Green River. Four years later he purchased a farm close to his father's farm and just outside of Morristown. Later he purchased additional land until he acquired several hundred acres, a great portion of which was used for pasturing cattle, Mr. Weidlein making his chief business that of a stock feeder, at which he amassed a fortune. He resided on the farm until 1895, during which time he served a term as supervisor and was also a member of the school board. On leaving the farm he purchased property in Geneseo, where he has since lived, although he continued in active management of his big farm practically up until a short time before his death.

He is survived by six brothers and six children, two children have preceded him in death. The children who survive are: W. E. Weidlein, of Augusta, Kan., J. C. Weidlein, of Webster City, Iowa, Mrs. Vina King, of Champaign, Ill., Mrs. Nora Schroeder, Mrs. Carrie Schroeder and Mrs. Laura Rastede, all of Geneseo. He is survived by twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the family home at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday, Rev. Frank S. Brewer, Mr. Weidlein's pastor, officiating. The burial was in the family lot in Morristown cemetery. Present at the funeral were all of the children, also two brothers, J. G. Weidlein, of Wellman, Iowa, and J. V. Weidlein, of Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Weidlein was one of the sturdy pioneers of early days in Henry county, and his industry, thrift and noble life brought him the love and esteem of a wide circle of friends. In conformity to the legal requirements of his native country he served as a soldier three years and then obtaining a substitute, came with his father's family to this country. They settled in Bradford county, Pennsylvania.

On March 11th, 1839, he was married to Elnora C. Emmert, and they lived on a farm there until 1851, when they started for the west and arriving in this county entered land in Osco township which they farmed until 1856, when they sold it and bought 320 acres in Edford township. Mr. Weidlein occupied this place until 1880, when he removed to Geneseo. In 1894 his wife, who had been his faithful companion through fifty-five years of sorrows and pleasures, passed away, and since that time he has lived with his daughter on North College avenue.
